Younger Americans Don’t Deserve ‘Legacy of Debt’

With a Democratic presidential debate scheduled Saturday in Iowa, a former member of Congress from the state takes the candidates in both parties to task for failing to focus more on the need for broad fiscal reforms.

“Unfortunately, addressing the federal budget challenge has not made its way into the top priorities of the Democratic campaigns,” former U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell, a Democrat, writes in a recent guest column in the Des Moines Register.  “The fact that many Republicans have also taken a pass on this issue is of no comfort.”

He adds: “Partisanship aside, what matters most to me, as I think about my eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, is the legacy of debt we are leaving to them and future generations.”

Noting that the national debt is “already staggering” and continues to grow, Boswell emphasizes the importance of entitlement and tax reform.

Boswell serves on the Iowa cabinet of First Budget, a non-partisan initiative of The Concord Coalition and Fix the Debt to highlight the nation’s fiscal problems and press the presidential candidates to offer solutions.
