Concord Action: “Checks for Votes is Among Worst Uses of Money We Don’t Have”

News Coverage

(Arlington Va. – September 10, 2026) – Concord Action Executive Director Carolyn Bourdeaux released the following statement in response to President Trump’s proposal to cut a $5,000 check to every American adult should Republicans maintain control of Congress in the midterms:

“The President last night proposed a $5,000 ‘dividend’ for Americans with $1.3 trillion dollars our nation doesn’t have. A dividend is for profits. We aren’t making a profit these days – in fact, the reverse. We’re spending $2 trillion more per year than we’re bringing in, with a good chunk of that going toward interest payments on our staggering $40 trillion in debt.

“If the President wants to put $5,000 in every American’s pocket, the best thing he can do is get the deficit and debt under control, find a bipartisan solution to Social Security’s imminent insolvency, and set the fiscal future of the nation back on the right track. Checks for votes is among the worst possible uses of money we don’t have.”
