Former U.S. Rep. Steven LaTourette, a long-time champion of bipartisan fiscal reform, died last week at age 62 after fighting pancreatic cancer.
The Ohio Republican served in the House from 1995 to 2013. In 2012 he introduced a budget plan with Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.) that was based on recommendations from a bipartisan majority of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform (Simpson-Bowles).
That legislation, although it was defeated, remains an important model for fiscal reform. The Concord Coalition honored LaTourette, Cooper and 36 other House members who supported the plan with the 2012 Paul E. Tsongas Economic Patriot Award.
