(Arlington, Va. – Nov. 4, 2026) – Dr. Carolyn Bourdeaux, executive director of Concord Action and The Concord Coalition, today issued the following statement in response to the 2026 midterm election results:
“American voters have spoken. They are concerned about the rising cost of living, anxious about their economic future, and looking to their elected leaders for wise governance.
“Both parties now have an obligation to meet that charge. Taking up the mantle of fiscal responsibility means making difficult choices, finding common ground, and safeguarding the nation’s future.
“Our national debt and persistent deficits are central to the affordability challenge that played such a prominent role in this election. Rising federal borrowing puts upward pressure on interest rates, while mounting interest payments consume resources that could otherwise strengthen our economy and support national priorities. A credible affordability agenda must include a credible fiscal agenda.
“We congratulate Democrats on their sweeping victory. Now comes the responsibility of translating their promises into sound fiscal policy. With our national debt over $40 trillion and $2 trillion in annual deficits, that work must include an honest reckoning with what we spend, how we pay for it, and the obligations we pass on to future generations.
“Republicans entering the lame duck session also have a chance to establish a foundation for bipartisan fiscal progress that includes ensuring all bills are fully paid for and creating a fiscal commission to stabilize the nation’s fiscal position and secure the solvency of Social Security.
“Neither party can secure our fiscal future alone, and neither can afford to treat it as someone else’s responsibility. Together, they must put the nation on a sustainable path that strengthens economic opportunity, preserves our capacity to meet future challenges, and honors our obligations for generations to come.”
