Statement on House Rules Committee Bill Markups

Press Releases

In response to the House Rules Committee markup of a bill that could increase the national debt by roughly $3.3 trillion, Carolyn Bourdeaux, Executive Director of Concord Action, issued the following statement:

“As the US House continues to deliberate on the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act,” there is zero evidence of any meaningful effort to address the roughly $3 trillion that this legislation will add to the national debt before the bill goes to the floor. The House legislation is better than the $5.8 trillion reconciliation instructions approved by the US Senate; however, our country is $36 trillion in debt and all proposed legislation should, at a minimum, be deficit neutral.

Congress continues to act as though it faces no budget constraint and no trade offs between priorities, even in the face of rising interest rates, a credit rating downgrade, and inflationary pressure. Ignoring warning signs does not make them go away. Yet, Congress continues to speed our nation to the brink of a fiscal crisis, closing its eyes and plugging its ears. This is unacceptable.

We urge Members of Congress to oppose this legislation and go back to the drawing board to develop legislation that addresses national priorities but does not add to the deficit. It can be done.”
