
In response to recent House committee markups on the reconciliation bill that could increase the national debt by roughly $3.3 trillion, Carolyn Bourdeaux, Executive Director of Concord Action, issued the following statement:
“The budget reconciliation process is meant to reduce, not increase, deficits. Yet, the budget reconciliation bill in the House continues to be on pace to add a historic increase to our national debt. Yes, the House bill does offset a portion of its tax cuts and spending increases. I appreciate how hard this was for legislators to even get to this point, and it is better than the $5.8 trillion Senate proposal on the table. But we have reached a point where we are ‘defining deviancy down.’ $3.3 trillion is still not OK, and this bill deploys the accounting gimmick of arbitrary “sunset” provisions on taxes to mask the real cost. We are $36 trillion in debt: no more games, no more gimmicks, if it’s a priority then pay for it.”
