
In response to the letter 32 Members of the House of Representatives sent to Speaker Mike Johnson demanding that the reconciliation bill contain a minimum of $2 trillion in offsets, Carolyn Bourdeaux, Executive Director of Concord Action, issued the following statement:
“We agree with Representative Smucker and his colleagues that ‘America’s fiscal path is unsustainable and worsening’ and that deficit reduction efforts should not use budget gimmicks. We are glad to see 32 Members of Congress take a stand for fiscal responsibility while so many others are looking the other way and advancing one of the single largest debt increases of all time.
“While the proposed House framework calling for $2 trillion in deficit offsets is significantly better than the Senate’s instructions calling for $4 billion in offsets, it would still allow for $2.5 trillion in new debt that we cannot afford. Inflated economic growth projections and an assumed windfall of tax revenues are simply not going to make that number go away. Adding to our debt is hurting our economy, fueling increasing interest rates and casting a shadow over our future and that of our children and grandchildren. Congress must stop adding to our unsustainable $36 trillion national debt.”
