Plan Calls For Fiscal Reports from Comptroller General

Rep. Jim Renacci (R-Ohio) has introduced a measure to require annual fiscal reports from the U.S. comptroller general to a joint session of Congress. Renacci was joined by a bipartisan group of House lawmakers who are co-sponsoring the bill.

Robert L. Bixby, executive director of The Concord Coalition, praised the resolution in a letter to Renacci, noting that “a fact-based presentation from the comptroller general would help to inform the discussion of fiscal sustainability and perhaps act as a spur for necessary reforms.”

Under Renacci’s proposal, the comptroller general’s presentation would include “financial measures, sustainability measures, budget deficits and long-term projections.” Many fiscal and economic experts from across the political spectrum, including former Comptroller General Dave Walker, have warned of the need to put the nation’s finances on sounder footing.

Renacci and Rep. John Carney (D-Del.) head the House’s Bipartisan Working Group, consisting of lawmakers who regularly discuss solutions on key issues.
