
In response to the Senate’s vote that the current policy baseline can be used to score extending tax cuts as deficit-neutral, Carolyn Bourdeaux, Executive Director of Concord Action, released the following statement:
“As the Senate continues to push forward their version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that will add at least $3.9 trillion in debt over the next 10 years, fifty-three Senators just voted to double down on an accounting trick that allows them to ignore the cost of extending tax cuts. This vote to use a current policy baseline is not only dishonest, but it also creates a dangerous precedent for Congress to continue adding unchecked amounts to our alarming national debt without accountability.
The House and Senate should vote no and go back to the drawing board using honest accounting to write a bill that pays for any tax cuts or spending increases in a responsible way and leaves our country economically and fiscally stronger for future generations.”
