WASHINGTON — With the Republican National Convention this week and the Democrats’ gathering not far behind, The Concord Coalition today released an updated version of its “Key Questions Voters Should Ask Candidates About Our Nation’s Fiscal Future.” Concord urges all candidates for federal office to provide voters with clear explanations of how they would hold down federal deficits, reform the tax system, repair the entitlement programs and put the country on a more responsible path.

The questions include background information to help voters assess the fiscal rhetoric of this year’s candidates. The topics include the defense budget, Social Security, health care, tax policies, government waste, recommendations developed by the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform (Simpson-Bowles), the “fiscal cliff” (sharp spending cuts and the expiration of tax cuts scheduled for the end of this year), and possible areas for future bipartisan cooperation.

“With the federal budget running annual deficits in excess of a trillion dollars, and many official and unofficial sources warning that current fiscal policies are not sustainable, it is vital that voters in 2012 demand realistic solutions from the candidates,” Concord says.

The issue brief will be updated periodically to reflect new fiscal estimates and projections. It can be found here: http://www.concordcoalition.org/publications/2012/0827/key-questions-voters-should-ask-candidates-about-our-nations-fiscal-future-fa
